i have been worked with Renesas (Ex Hitashi) for a while, you need to know that ther is 2 modes if you want to flash or dump your H8 - user mode and boot mode - user mode is easy with just a USB>TTL and make connection but user kernel must be already on the flash.
for boot mode you need to configure TEST pin and NMI pin before reset or power on, but pay attention with this mode at the time of connection you loose your firmware because FDT automatically erase the chip.
